Urbanisation and growing volumes of traffic create new challenges and opportunities for transport

Tampere City Region is an important forerunner in the field of intelligent transport. It facilitates the testing of new solutions and development for intelligent transport – on the other hand, as a city region, it benefits from solutions that improve the functionality, predictability, safety and efficiency of the transport system.

To make this all happen within public and private partnerships, ITS Factory community has been established.

The test environment a size of a city

With regards to the number of inhabitants, Tampere city area is of a suitable size for testing transport products and services, whilst being sufficiently compact environment for agile and flexible decision-making and functional co-operation between the public and private sectors. This makes it a perfect test bed for experimenting intelligent transportation of tomorrow.

Open data enables end-user access to status and condition information of the transport network on the spot  — for developers and companies it provides new business opportunities.

Gathering know-how on automatic driving

Autonomous mobility pilots are running in Tampere City Region. Autonomous minibuses have entered the cityscape to help solve the challenges of city transport. Further, the test area for automatic driving, where autonomous vehicles can drive in real traffic, operates in Tampere. These development pilots aim to create real services and autonomous vehicle functions for end-users.

Boosting the electric transportation

The number of electric vehicles is growing world wide, and Finland is one of the leading countries as far as the number of electric buses is concerned. Furthermore, there’s vast expertise on development of payment and identification systems of the vehicle charging devices in Finland.

To gather user experiences for future development, the first electric buses have been introduced in Tampere city region.
