While regular venture firm fundraising isn’t expected to be particularly robust this year, there are signs that corporate venture capital will remain a steady source of funds in 2023 with a few exciting trends for early-stage startups. First of all, CVCs focus more on smaller deals (seed rounds). Secondly, in Europe corporate investors increased the number of deals to 903 in 2022, which is a 5-year high for the continent.

Another notable trend is that, despite the bear market, there was a record number of 101 newly launched CVC units. While CVCs participating in 26.2% of venture deals in 2022 is only up a hair over 2021’s 25.6%, this number does stand out because every other category of crossover investor participated less in 2022 than in 2021. It seems that in Europe a new wave of innovation has emerged with the rediscovery of corporate venture building.
