Is human-centered AI a priority in industry?

Developers of AI have the responsibility to ensure that their solutions are socially acceptable and cater for a variety of human-centered concerns. Such concerns include, for example, explainability, accountability, fairness, user control, and more generally positive user experience, sustainability, and ethics. But are developer organisations taking this responsibility seriously?

The KITE project (2019-2022) has investigated human-centered AI and related methods together with industrial partners. One of the observations has been that even when companies value the idea of human-centered AI, it is often difficult to integrate human-centered practices in companies’ current ways of working and design practice. Furthermore, developers may need new ways to concretize the broad set of concerns into design methods and processes.

In this session, a panel of industrial experts will discuss how they approach human-centered AI in their businesses. What might be the challenges in taking human-centered, societal, and ethical concerns into the center of attention? What kind of success stories are there of AI solutions that significantly improve people’s lives without causing major concerns? How can human-centeredness be intertwined with hard-core technical AI development?
