Health Innovations
Tampere is home to numerous world-class innovations in the health and life science sectors. With over a century-long legacy in the pharmaceutical industry, pioneering research in biodegradable polymers and regenerative medicine, and cutting-edge diabetes and cancer studies, the Tampere region has firmly established itself as a hub of health innovation.
Tampere University and Tampere University Hospital (TAYS) offer exceptional research, preclinical, and clinical services. Additionally, Finland is recognized as one of the world’s richest sources of health data.
Facilities like the Tampere University Hospital RDI Center, HealthHUB, Biobank, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, along with various testing and training service providers, help you access more information and explore opportunities in the region.
Innovation activities are further supported by Tampere’s strong regulatory expertise for businesses, offering both consultancy services and digital assessment tools.
Pharmaceutical Industry and Medical Biotechnology
Tampere boasts exceptional research expertise in cardiovascular diseases, vaccines, celiac disease, oncology, and pediatrics. Bioinformatics and clinical informatics are opening new avenues for the development of health technologies.
Tampere University Hospital provides excellent facilities for clinical research, supported by the Finnish Clinical Biobank Tampere (FCBT). FCBT is the fastest-growing biobank in Finland and is developing new methods, such as cold chain automation for sample processing.
For example, Santen, a global leader in ophthalmology, has established a significant research and development unit in Tampere. In the field of biotechnology, Tampere excels particularly in tissue engineering and stem cell therapy. A notable example is a bone graft grown inside a patient’s abdomen, based on stem cells isolated from the patient’s own tissues.

Health Sector Testbeds in the Tampere Region

Tampere University Hospital
Tampere University Hospital (Tays) is a visionary healthcare provider. In addition to delivering excellent care, it focuses on research, development, and innovation. As a university hospital, Tays also plays a key role in educating the healthcare professionals of the future.
Tampere University Community and Research Centers
The Tampere University Community focuses on technology, health, and society. The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) brings together unique research expertise from the fields of medicine, biosciences, and engineering. The faculty employs over 500 professionals and hosts more than 70 research groups.

The faculty employs over 600 professionals and hosts more than 100 research groups.
MET is committed to generating new knowledge and solutions that promote health and well-being, benefiting both individuals and society at large. The faculty is also a member of the SPARK Finland program, which offers commercialization support for academic researchers.
As one of the most research-intensive faculties at Tampere University, MET receives 54% of its €61 million budget from external funding sources, including the Academy of Finland, Business Finland, the EU, and numerous other foundations. This unique research environment and infrastructure innovatively integrate engineering, medicine, and biological sciences with society, patients, and companies interested in healthcare technology and engineering, providing both preclinical and clinical services.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) at Tampere University trains versatile professionals to meet the future demands of both medicine and health technology. The faculty offers extensive education in 50 medical specialties and 5 dental specialties.
Teaching is based on the latest global research, and students are closely integrated into the research community. The faculty maintains diverse learning environments, including modern simulation and laboratory facilities, with a strong focus on continuous development.

Specialized and Private Hospitals in the Tampere Region
Tampere Heart Hospital specializes in the treatment of cardiac patients, while Coxa is Finland’s only hospital fully dedicated to joint replacement surgeries. Both hospitals operate in close collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS).

Biobank and Data Services
The Finnish Clinical Biobank Tampere (FCBT) focuses on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and type 1 diabetes, aligning with the research strategies of both Tampere University and Tampere University Hospital. FCBT supports both academic research and the research and development activities of pharmaceutical companies.
Tampere is Recognized as One of the World’s Key Imaging Hubs, thanks to the region’s strong mobile technology heritage and university research in signal processing and imaging.
Over the past decades, the fusion of medical and technological expertise has led to numerous health technology innovations, including pioneering work in digital radiography.
AI Hub Tampere, a new artificial intelligence research center hosted by Tampere University, supports companies in leveraging AI and is building a new AI ecosystem in the Tampere region. Regulatory support is available for medical device manufacturers, extending up to AIMD-level (Active Implantable Medical Devices) product development.
