Hydrogen Hills: Tampere Region is well-positioned to lead the way in green hydrogen

    20241007 HH 1

Pirkanmaa Region could play a significant role in developing hydrogen infrastructure in Northern Europe. Hydrogen technologies could become part of the circular economy. The area is well-positioned to drive sustainable energy production and refining, in particular. The project’s working title is Hydrogen Hills.

    Top-tier location

Pirkanmaa region’s advantage is its unbeatable location.

We are part of a robust 400 kV electricity transmission grid and strategically located at a key north-south intersection for gas transmission. Energy here is inexpensive by European standards, and the available electricity is green, coming from hydropower and wind energy. Within a two-hour drive from the Tampere city region, you’ll find 80% of Finland's industrial capacity.

Biogenic carbon dioxide, which is valuable for the hydrogen industry, is also available. Biogenic CO₂ is released when biological material, such as biomass or its derivatives, burns or decomposes. Examples include CO₂ released from burning wood or biogas produced through biological decomposition.

Another benefit of the urban environment is that the heat generated during production can be used for heating buildings.

Finland is poised to become a leading country in the hydrogen industry, thanks to its stable, extensive, and sufficiently capable electricity grid.

Pirkanmaa region has positive experiences with various types and levels of alliances and collaborative projects.

Familiar projects that everyone recognizes from the urban landscape, where work has progressed—even ahead of schedule and below target costs—include the Tampere light rail and the Rantatunneli. A less visible joint project is the Sulkavuori wastewater treatment plant, which involves Kangasala, Lempäälä, Pirkkala, Tampere, Vesilahti, and Ylöjärvi.

PMO, or Project Management Office, refers to an organizational unit within a company that is responsible for the standardization, guidance, and coordination of project management. The PMO ensures that projects progress on schedule, stay within budget, and achieve defined objectives.

Pirkanmaa region has advanced projects, such as the Tarastenjärvi combined heat and power plant.

Nordic Ren-Gas is planning a production facility in Tampere. The proposed location for the plant is in close proximity to the Tarastenjärvi power plant. The project's goal is to build a production facility that generates renewable synthetic methane, hydrogen, and district heating produced from waste heat.

An innovative and multidisciplinary industrial-scale bio- and circular economy business area is being developed at the ECO3 business area. ECO3 is located in the Kolmenkulma area of Nokia.

The Tampere region is home to technical educational institutions that support the hydrogen industry. Also involved are the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE).

Hydrogen enables the production and storage of green energy.
