Indonesia has a plan to build a new city for its capital in the island of Kalimantan (Borneo). The concept of the new environmentally friendly capital city, requires sustainability across all dimensions, ranging from use of sustainable construction methods, to energy efficient design and renewable energy usage as well as public transportation system. First offices are due to move from Jakarta to the New Capital already in 2024. The estimated cost of the government part of the City is 32 bl. USD and it is planned to be financed mainly by private investors through PPP scheme. Government’s share is planned to be approximately 20% of the investments and it is planned to be mostly in the beginning of the project. This is strategically and critically important project for the Indonesian government.
Government target is to reduce usage of fossil fuels by providing more renewable energy to increase the percentage of renewable energy in energy mix from current 13% to 23% in 2025. The main target is to achieve zero carbon emission by or before 2060. With this target in mind, there are many projects initiated in Indonesia energy market to achieve the goal in renewable energy such as waste to energy, and energy transition with smart grid development. Government initiatives also have been started in electric vehicle sector to meet the target such as launching an ambitious $17 billion roadmap on electric vehicle sector to reach 2.1 million electric motorcycle and 400.000 electric cars of which 20% are locally manufactured and it is by 2025.
