Tampere HealthHub is an innovative health sector center located in Tampere, on the Kauppi campus, in the Finnmedi 5 building.

Tampere HealthHub offers a wide range of services and supports health sector companies and startups in their growth and development.

The goal of Tampere HealthHub is to create a strong community for health sector actors, providing spaces, resources, and networking opportunities.

The Tampere region is known for expertise in certain specialised areas like tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, stem cell research, and vaccine research.

Health innovations

Tampere is home for a variety of world-class health and life science innovations. Over a century old pharma industry heritage, pioneering research in biodegradable polymers and regenerative medicine all the way to world-class diabetes and oncological research of today, have home in Tampere region.

Tampere University and the Tampere University Hospital provide excellent research, preclinical and clinical services. Not to forget that Finland possess one of the world’s greatest health-data assets.

Tampere University Hospital RDI center, HealthHUB, Biobank and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology along with testing and education providers help you find out more and explore this opportunity.

For innovation activities Tampere offers also strong regulatory knowledge for companies. There are both consultancy and electronic evaluation tools available.

Pharma and medical biotechnology

Tampere has very strong research capabilities for cardiovascular diseases, vaccines, celiac disease, oncology and pediatric diseases. Bioinformatics and clinical informatics provide new opportunities for health technology.

Tampere University Hospital offers excellent conditions for clinical research, which is supported by the Finnish Clinical Biobank Tampere (FCBT). FCBT is the fastest growing biobank in Finland and it is developing new methods for instance using cold chain robotics in the sample handling.

As an example, Santen, a world leading Ophthalmology company, has a major R&D unit in Tampere. In biotechnology, Tampere  is particularly strong in the fields of tissue engineering and stem cell therapy. The prime example being a bone graft cultured from stem cells isolated from patient’s own tissue and grown inside his abdomen.

 

 

Health IT and digital health

Tampere is the center of ICT developing new solutions also to health and well-being sector.

Large companies are developing patient record systems to hospitals, as well as UNA Oy, which is a joint project of municipalities to create common database for hospital patient records. In addition, several smaller companies are developing IT solutions to hospitals and applications for end users.

In the Tampere region, there’s a lot of R&D activity for peripheral devices and sensors of digital health applications. For instance, the first heart rate monitoring belt for consumers based on textile electronics was developed in Tampere, as well as a big part of wearables and sensors used for MyData collection today. Digitalisation supports personalized care pathways and virtual policlinic solutions.

Tampere university community’s priority areas are technology, health and society. The faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET), with staff of over 500 with over 70 research groups, brings together unique research expertise in medicine, biosciences, and engineering.

Tampere university community’s priority areas are technology, health and society. The faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET), with staff of over 600 with over 100 research groups, brings together unique research expertise in medicine, biosciences, and engineering.

The MET faculty is committed to generating new knowledge and solutions that promote health and wellbeing and benefit both individuals and the broader society. It is also a member of SPARK Finland, a programme that offers commercialisation support for academic researchers.

The MET faculty is one of the most research oriented at Tampere University with  54% of our 61M€  budget coming from grants from Academy of Finland, Business Finland, EU and numerous other foundations. A unique research environment and infrastructure innovatively combine engineering, medicine and biology for the benefit of the science, society and patients as well as companies interested on health technology and engineering research, preclinical and clinical services.

In addition, Regea Cell and Tissue Center and the Finnish Hub for Development and Validation of Integrated Approaches (FHAIVE), are located in the faculty.

MET is the second-largest provider of medical specialist training in Finland

The faculty of Medicine and Health Technology of Tampere University produces graduates with broad-based knowledge and skills to meet the future demand for both medical and health technology professionals. It offers extensive training in 50 medical specialties and 5 dental specialties.

The teaching draws on the latest research conducted worldwide, and we work to ensure that the students are closely integrated into the research community. We maintain diverse learning environments, such as modern simulation and laboratory facilities, and invest in their continuous development.

Two main degree programmes are available in the Finnish language:

  • The Licentiate Degree Programme in Medicine aims to train students to become medical doctors with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to acquire, evaluate and use new knowledge.
  • The Degree Programme in Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering provide students with a unique, cross-disciplinary environment for learning that brings together biosciences, biomedicine and biomedical engineering to improve people’s well-being and promote the adoption of new health technology applications.

Two English-taught master’s programmes for international students

  • The Master’s Degree Programme in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering, and
  • The Master´s Degree Programme in Biomedical Technology.

Also, it offers two doctoral programmes with together over 400 doctoral students that aim to provide innovative and internationally recognised doctoral education and generate research evidence that improves human well-being and delivers wider benefits to society.

Specialised and private hospitals in the Tampere Region

Tampere Heart Hospital treats patients with heart problems and Coxa is the only hospital in Finland that specializes fully in joint replacement surgery. Both hospitals operate in close connection with the Tampere University Hospital. In addition, there are several private healthcare and well-being providers offering services in the region.

The Finnish Clinical Biobank Tampere (FCBT) focuses especially on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, autoimmune diseases and type 1 diabetes in alignment with the research strategy of both Tampere University and Tampere University Hospital. FCBT serves both academic research and R&D done in medical companies.

Tampere is known as one of the key imaging hubs in the world due to the rich mobile technologies heritage, as well as university research in signal processing and imaging.

Over the past decades the combination of medical and technological know-how has produced numerous health technology innovations, such as pioneering work in digital radiography.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence offer ways to use existing solutions in more effective and innovative ways

AI Hub Tampere, a new artificial intelligence research center hosted by the Tampere University, helps companies to utilise artificial intelligence (AI) and builds a new AI ecosystem in the Tampere Region. The regulatory support is available for medical device companies all the way to AIMD-level product development.
