Where are you from?
I was born in a country that does not exist anymore. I come from Leipzig which was a city in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) and I was 8 years old when Germany got reunited. Leipzig today is a very nice city and the place where I grew up and went to school. After graduation I started my studies at the Chemnitz University of Technology. One can find a compass rose at the market square in Chemnitz with the city’s partner cities marked at the directions they are. One can also find Tampere there as it is one of Chemnitz’s partner cities. During my studies in Germany I decided to go for an exchange year at the Tampere University of Technology where I stayed to finish my master studies and where I found a job.

What would you like to tell about yourself?
I am a curious person and I like to think about all kinds of things. I also enjoy learning practical skills and teaching them to other people. I have learned to sail and became a teacher for the boating courses at the local navigation club. Sailing is a very nice hobby in the summer on Lake Näsijärvi and an ideal get away after a week of office work or long business trips.

Why is Tampere the best place to live?
Tampere is the right size for me. You can reach everything important either by foot, bike or public transport if you don’t want to use the car. There are a lot of possibilities for cultural experiences and sport activities in Tampere and you can find a club for almost every hobby. The cafeteria and restaurant scene has developed a lot and there are very nice places to get some tasty stuff. After a nice drink or meal you only have to go a couple of minutes and you are either in the forest or at the lake and can enjoy the peacefulness of Finnish nature.

What are your professional activities?
I am working as director of sales and marketing for a local laser manufacturer that is a spin off from Tampere University of Technology. I have the chance to travel internationally to meet customers and partners, which is always interesting. The products are high tech and require good technical knowledge in order to provide the best consulting for the customers. It is a small company but market leader in its business area, which makes me proud to work there. Besides my business development activities I am responsible for the quality management, which seems like a natural thing for a German.

What is your involvement in international activities?
When I was studying in Germany I was an accountant for AIESEC, a student organization that helps students to find traineeships abroad and helped international trainees to feel like home in their German communities. During my exchange year in Tampere I got a full load of internationalization, meeting many students from different countries, studying in English and travelling within Finland and the neighbor countries. Oh and yes, I have come across one or two parties during that time.

After my exchange year I joined the group of international degree students to pursue my Master’s degree at Tampere University of Technology. Before graduation I founded with friends the international student club INTO at TUT which was an amazing experience. During that time I also took part in the project “Workplace Pirkanmaa,” which mapped the needs of local companies for international workforce. The international mentoring program was a result of the project and I have been regularly a mentor for international students. I met many energetic people with great ideas in those activities and there have been many interesting projects realized during the last years and I am sure there are more to come.

What is your mission as a Tampere Ambassador?
My mission is to promote Tampere as a destination for holidays. I meet many people internationally and quite often I am in big cities with a lot of rush. I believe that many people search for some peace during their holidays and I think Finland and Tampere are great places to recharge the batteries.

What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
Tampere is a dynamic city with many bright people, successful companies and great educational institutes. There is a great start up scene in Finland, which has created already inspiring success stories and I hope to see more. One can see that the citizens of Tampere love their city and I think that is a driving force for many activities and attempts to make life even greater here.
