The use of artificial intelligence in business is rapidly growing in the Tampere Region. According to a recent survey conducted by Business Tampere, the Tampere Chamber of Commerce, and Tampere University, nearly 90 percent of respondents believe that AI can improve their company’s competitiveness.

Almost 70 percent expect AI-related investments to be relevant within the next three years.

AI is already being applied at a practical level in many companies. Half of the respondents have used AI to enhance business or service processes. Around 30 percent have leveraged it to reduce fixed costs or improve customer experience. Additionally, 20 percent have developed new business concepts or services with the help of AI.

About 40 percent of respondents have already developed an AI strategy, and 30 percent report having gained a competitive advantage from using AI.

Skills and resources play a key role
Despite the progress, there are still several challenges related to AI adoption. Sixty percent of respondents feel they need more expertise, and half say it’s difficult to find skilled professionals. While implementation is still in its early stages for many, 70 percent say they are aware of AI’s potential in their business.

Limited resources stand out as a major barrier: about half of respondents cite this as a significant obstacle. Lack of skills and data are the most common hindrances, while only 20 percent view regulation as a major barrier to AI adoption.

A growing market requires clearer support
Companies offering AI services see strong growth potential in the market. Seventy percent report positive business prospects, and over 80 percent plan to recruit more staff within the next year. However, major bottlenecks were also identified: 75 percent of providers consider the lack of data and basic infrastructure the biggest obstacles to AI utilization.

The Tampere Region already boasts diverse expertise and practical applications in AI. However, broader adoption of AI solutions requires collaboration, skills development, and targeted support—especially for small and medium-sized enterprises.
