XYZ Masterclass: The Future Role of A.I. in Filmmaking

Film Tampere proudly presents the next masterclass in cooperation with XYZ Films: The Future Role of A.I. in Filmmaking.

AI is a prominent point of conversation in many regions of life, and the film industry is no exception. This technology is often portrayed in a negative light, but are our apprehensions causing us to overlook keyways AI can aid and even improve the filmmaking process? In this Masterclass titled, “The Future Role of A.I. in Filmmaking”, our panelists plan to discuss how they use AI in their own work and where they see it going in the years to come.

The masterclass will be held on Monday, January 29th at 7pm in Finland time / 9am LA time remotely via Zoom. The masterclass will also be available to view afterwards. The link to the recording will only be shared to those who have signed up, so remember to do so even if you are unable to attend live.

The masterclass takes 1,5 hours and has an open Q&A section at the end of the panel. The class is open and free of charge to all film and TV professionals and students. The registration for the masterclass is open until Sunday 28th. at 7 pm.

The masterclass is moderated by Aram Tertzakian, co-founder of Los Angeles based XYZ Films. XYZ Films is an integrated content company whose mission is to empower visionary storytellers from every corner of the planet. As an independent studio, the company is uniquely suited to identify talented filmmakers and bring their stories to life. Fanny Heinonen, Program Director at Film Tampere will host the masterclass.

The panelists are:
Joe Penna
Joe Penna is a Brazilian filmmaker best known for his acclaimed debut feature ARCTIC starring Mads Mikkelsen which premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Most recently, Penna co-wrote and directed Netflix’s sci-fi thriller STOWAWAY starring Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, and Toni Collette. He has recently produced Kendrick’s directorial debut WOMAN OF THE HOUR, which premiered at TIFF. Prior to his feature directing work, Penna began his career on YouTube, where his videos garnered nearly 3 million subscribers and over 400 million views, grabbing the attention of Coca Cola, Listerine, and the late EDM producer Avicii who all hired Penna to direct their commercials and music videos. Penna has been active in the AI space, with particular focus on AI in filmmaking.

Katri Manninen
Katri Manninen, a seasoned screenwriter from Southern Finland, has created 12 drama series, 29 books, and 4 films. Her thriller series Shadow Lines won global acclaim and nods from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Since 2018, she’s explored AI in screenwriting, focusing on its creative potential and societal implications. Currently a doctoral student at Aalto University, Katri researches how to work with AI to increase screenwriters’ creativity and sense of authorship.

Ryan Black
Ryan is Head of Acquisitions at Flawless A.I. and a seasoned film industry executive with over 16 years of experience in acquisitions, development and production. Previously, Ryan spent 14 years at Lionsgate as the VP of Acquisitions & Development for Grindstone where he was integral to building out their library to over 600 films.

You can send pre-questions to the speakers upon registration. Note that by sending questions in advance, you will get the most out of a masterclass lecture that is worth taking advantage of!
