Durham Region is part of the Greater Toronto Area, the strongest economic metropolitan area in Canada. GTA is among the world’s 25 largest economies and home to 38% of Canada’s business headquarters. In the North American context, it is the 2nd largest financial center, the 3rd largest tech sector and it has 2nd largest ICT talent pool.
Durham region’s priority clusters include future energy, next-generation mobility, arts, culture and creative, applied digital technology and agri-food. The rapid pace of global change is creating new challenges and opportunities that are still being defined.
With a long-established automotive industry, Durham Region continues to foster innovation as the mobility industry evolves. The following areas are positioned for growth: EV technologies and charging infrastructure, autonomous/connected vehicle technologies, software development and testing, additive manufacturing and 3D printing, and vehicle testing/prototyping.
The region is situated within the Toronto Region – Waterloo Innovation Corridor, a global hot spot for technology growth. The following areas of digital technology will be the drivers of growth: data analytics, immersive technology, cyber security, applied AI, next-gen automation, and medical technology.
