The Lyyli Living Lab is a internationally unique, real-life operational tram system equipped for experimenting, testing, and promoting next generation urban mobility solutions. It allows various parties to cooperate on the experiment-driven development of urban mobility solutions in a real operating environment: the Tampere Tramway system, the Tramway Mock-up, and the very first Lyyli tram car.
Tampere Testbed in Hervanta offers companies, equipment and sensor manufacturers, automotive operators and researchers a central location for testing and developing automated mobility solutions in the middle of one of Tampere’s fastest-growing districts.
As electric vehicles (EVs) gain traction worldwide, Finland is emerging as a leader, particularly in the adoption of electric buses. With extensive expertise in vehicle charging payment and identification systems, Finland has built a strong foundation for EV infrastructure. In Tampere, this progress is evident through the city’s rapidly expanding public EV charging network and the integration of electric buses and autonomous electric vehicles into the public transit system.
Tampere has been piloting autonomous electric buses as part of its public transportation network. Smaller autonomous buses are already operating in the Hervanta area, with plans to introduce larger models seating up to 30 passengers in the future. These initiatives aim to improve connectivity and provide eco-friendly travel options, especially on low-traffic routes.
The popularity of electric shared vehicles is also rising in Tampere, offering a sustainable and convenient way to navigate the city. These efforts to expand electric transportation reflect Tampere’s commitment to creating a green, accessible urban environment, making it easier for both residents and visitors to choose electric travel.
Finland is advancing also quickly in autonomous driving technology, with Tampere at the forefront. Recent legislative changes have opened doors for autonomous vehicle trials, and top Finnish researchers are addressing unique Nordic challenges, such as environmental sensing and adapting to winter conditions.
Wondering if the cycle path is clear of snow or where to find the nearest electric vehicle charging point? Tampere’s real-time transport snapshot provides up-to-date answers, thanks to data from both public and private sources. Through collaborative projects and Tampere’s Open Data Portal, which offers free access to diverse transport data, the city is pioneering new ways to make transport information widely accessible for developers, authorities, and citizens alike.
