Mining and tunnelling equipment manufacturer Normet opened its new technology centre in Pirkkala on 4 September. The investment is a tangible demonstration of the region’s strengths and capabilities. The Tampere region has developed into a uniquely strong international ecosystem for the development of mining equipment and other mobile machinery

Normet’s new technology centre focuses on autonomous technologies, robotics, software development and other digital solutions. In addition to research and product development, the centre provides a demonstration environment where customers can experience remote-controlled machinery, autonomous capabilities and battery-electric mining equipment in action.

The mining industry is a prime example of why autonomous and electric solutions are not simply a trend, but a necessity. Mines are increasingly being developed in demanding environments where temperatures can reach as high as 80°C. These are conditions where human presence should be minimised, while the extreme environment places entirely new demands on technology. Autonomous operations and remote control are therefore essential for ensuring safe and productive mining.

A world-class mining technology hub

Normet chose the Tampere region for its new technology centre because of the area’s strong technology ecosystem. The region is home to world-class mining expertise and a highly specialised cluster of companies. Globally significant industry players such as Sandvik, Metso and Robit have a strong presence in the region.

Together, these companies form a closely connected and internationally recognised mining technology hub that attracts new businesses to the region while providing an environment where established companies can continue to grow.

The mining industry is part of a much broader ecosystem. The Tampere region is home to a strong concentration of expertise in mobile machinery, including 12 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) whose products range from port automation and forestry machinery to mobile equipment for the defence sector. The same technological expertise can be applied across multiple industries, creating synergies and strengthening the entire cluster.

Connections between different ecosystems are particularly valuable for companies looking for development partners, pilot customers, or a location for their R&D and manufacturing operations, says Pertti Aimonen, Chief Operating Officer at Business Tampere.

A strong industrial foundation and an ambition to innovate

The Tampere region’s competitive edge is no coincidence. Nokia’s legacy of developing world-class technology is combined with deep expertise in mechanical engineering and machinery. The region has a long-standing ambition to reinvent itself and stay at the forefront of technological development.

Pioneering innovations thrive in an environment where industry players can connect and collaborate naturally, and where new expertise is continuously developed. Tampere University and the wider higher education community, together with a strong pool of skilled professionals, provide a solid foundation for this continued development.
