World-Class Chip Expertise from Tampere

Tampere is Europe’s leading hub for semiconductor and chip innovation, bringing together system-on-chip design, optical chip development, fast-growing startups, international research and top-level education in one dynamic ecosystem.

The Finnish Chips Competence Centre

Established under Tampere’s Chip Program, The Finnish Chips Competence Centre FiCCC brings together top experts in the field and accelerates digitalization across industries. The center supports the development of competitive chips, boosts demand, and operates from Tampere University’s Kampus Arena.

Open Pilot Line SiPFAB

Alongside FiCCC, SiPFAB is an open System-in-a-Package pilot line where companies can develop and test next-generation chip systems. It enables the creation of sustainable, customized and packaged solutions that expand the use of technologies in the most demanding applications.

Educating Experts, Advancing Innovation

Tampere is Europe’s leading chip design hubs, home to over 500 designers, global tech leaders like Nokia, Microsoft and Nordic Semiconductor, and Tampere University, which trains most of Finland’s chip experts. Alongside this, the city hosts a thriving “Laser Valley” cluster of world-class photonics, semiconductor and laser companies including Modulight, Schott, Coherent, Optofidelity and Vexlum.

A Global Leader in Semiconductor Expertise

Tampere, Espoo, Oulu and Joensuu form a powerful competence network that brings together chip design, telecommunications, photonics, artificial intelligence and quantum computing. This ecosystem positions Finland among the world’s top countries in high technology expertise.

Semiconductors sit at the heart of the global €600 billion market, with Tampere area alone generating hundreds of millions of euros in chip-related revenue. Finland’s goal is to triple the size of its semiconductor industry by 2035.

In 2021, 1.1 trillion microchips were produced worldwide – that’s 140 chips for every person on the planet. They enable artificial intelligence, telecommunications and all modern data processing, powering everything from smartphones and appliances to cars and critical infrastructure.
