Enico has delivered an energy storage system to a client in Latvia, marking one of the largest deals in the company’s history. The deal originated from a business delegation trip organized by Business Tampere two years ago.

CEO Marko Lähteenmäki, who participated in the trip to Latvia, emphasizes that Business Tampere’s work in organizing the delegation and facilitating business contacts was instrumental in making the deal possible for Enico.

“This project involves an energy storage system with a capacity of three megawatts and six megawatt-hours, integrated with a solar power plant. Its purpose is to support the solar plant’s production and optimize its operation,” Lähteenmäki explains.

“In addition, the system serves as a frequency reserve for Latvia’s national grid operator, helping stabilize frequency fluctuations in the grid.”

The same delegation included several other companies from the Tampere region aiming for growth. Business Tampere, in collaboration with the companies and the Latvian Embassy, arranged tailored business meetings to match their interests. Over the two-day trip, approximately ten business meetings were held. In addition to Enico’s successful client acquisition, another company in the delegation found a suitable subcontractor for its operations.

A Rapidly Changing Energy Landscape in the Baltics

The energy infrastructure in the Baltic countries is undergoing rapid transformation after Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania disconnected from Russia’s main grid in January. While electricity had already stopped flowing from Russia, the Russian grid had previously helped stabilize the neighboring countries’ networks.

Driven by the energy transition, Enico has grown rapidly in recent years, reaching nearly €10 million in revenue. Energy storage solutions and related frequency balancing systems are increasingly needed to manage fluctuations in renewable energy production. Wind power, for instance, is affected by weather conditions—on calm days, turbines don’t spin, at least not by wind power alone.

Business Delegations: A Gateway to Deals and Partnerships

Business Tampere organizes and coordinates several business delegations each year, targeting markets suitable for companies in the Tampere region. The successful Latvian trip for Enico was coordinated by Business Tampere’s industrial sector lead, Heini Wallander, and customer relations manager, Jouni Myllymäki.

“This was a good example of an effective export trip, which quickly materialized into a new business. It is the best part of our job when we are able to help companies in the region,” says Heini Wallander, Head of Industry, reflecting on the collaboration between Enico and Business Tampere.

Upcoming trips include a delegation for machinery companies to the Techindustry fair in Latvia from November 27–29, as well as a trip to the Elmia Subcontractor fair in Jönköping.
